Gov. Dayton Loses Dog To Cancer

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Governor Mark Dayton lost his beloved dog, Dakota, to cancer on Wednesday.

The German shepherd died after fighting cancer for three years.

On his Facebook page, Dayton wrote that he fed her around 5:30 Wednesday morning. When he checked on her an hour later, she was dead.

Dayton called Dakota his protector and pal and said he’ll miss her enormously.

Dayton has another dog, Mesabi, who is Dakota’s brother.

I am a dog lover and feel for the dog but this had to be on the morning news? Who cares about Daytons personal life. I dislike him as governor already.

    • Craig

What’s wrong with Red? Must be a neo-con who can’t think before posting. What a disgrace!

    • Aurora

Piss off, red. You clearly saw the title of the story and read it anyway, then decided to gripe about its lack of importance. Not only have you wasted your time which could be better spent working on being a decent human being, you’ve also wasted ours for having to read your nasty comment. I’m sorry for the governor’s loss. Losing a pet is very difficult. Time heals.

      • Joe

Aurora, That is well said and I hope that it makes it into his cranium… Make it a great day!

  • suzanne berger

I am sorry for your loss i went through it myself in 2007. It will take some time for you and Mesabi to get over the loss.

  • Patrick

Wasn’t Dayton booed and protested at his press conference about signing on to the national health care bill that day as well. He then invited the protesters to the podium so they could have a say. What a day and what a class act. Sorry for your loss governor. Good luck to you and Mesabi. Please adopt a shelter or foster dog when you are ready for a new companion.

  • Carol

Its really nice to hear someone takes care of their pets. There is nothing wrong with spending your money on trying to cure cancer in your pet. God Bless You Mark Dayton.

  • Mary

In my opinion, this is kind of a cruel thing to say. Maybe you have never lost a beloved pet, but compassion for another is never out of style – whatever your personal politics may be. I’m sorry for you loss, Governer Dayton.

  • M

I could care less about your political views!!

Tthis is someone who lost a beloved dog as well as his other dog who lost a playmate, pet’s feel loss too!

Rude, rude, rude people, this is no way to act whether you like Mr. Dayton or not show a little resepct… an animal in any family is a part of your family. No wonder people dislike this state. It’s not mn nice but mn rude. Mr. Dayton whether I voted for you or not it does not matter. What matter is I hope you find some peace and good luck with Mesabi . Mesabi must be missing and hurting to knowing the other is gone. God bless and Good luck with your new job!!

  • Lori

Is the world really filled with this many cruel and nasty people? Doesnt anyone have a nice thing to say? How horribly sad this Country and our State has become.

We are sorry for your loss of Dakota. We have lost several Shepards as the years have gone by. It is heart breaking. We found a black Shepard on the net, she was homeless What a treasured find. Recently we found out she is a Belgium Shepard long hair and coal black

Red, We are sorry for your negative view of the world… We are also very sorry that you can’t help yourself from bringing the rest of us down too. You can see from the other posts that it is not appreciated. Although I did not vote for Gov Dayton, I can still muster the respect that he deserves, both personally and officially. Lighten up a bit as life is just too short…

  • Kodiak's Mom

If one of his sons had died of cancer, it would have been on the morning news. What’s the difference? A real dog lover would know that Dakota was a family member of the governor and that’s new in any state.

  • Hannah

I lost Heidi Dog last summer. She was a 14 year old Sheltie and I still feel bad for our loss. I don’t like Dayton but can feel for his loss!

  • Kevin Greve

I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my beloved friend “Ceasar” to cancer on 8/31/2010. I hope that you and Mesabi find healing and peace in each other.

OK, so politics aside, the story is about a dog dieing. People lose their pet dogs everyday. I lost one of mine a few years ago and no one from the media reported it, same with hundreds of others. While sad, a dog dieing is not news worthy, it’s that simple. It’s only here because of who the owner is, so, in that respect it is political.

    • Slim

Like Chuck said, “Dayton is a famous person and that is a fact, so he will make the news a few more times than you do…” The story is not about you, so get over it and move on already. While some people feel strongly about pets, that is great, just don’t take it upon yourself to criticize or minimize it.

A loss is a loss. My sympathy is extended to the new governor. Let’s exhibit our Minnesota Nice for once.

Yes a loss is a loss, and pets are pets. To me, they are family. I’m so sorry Mark for your family’s loss. I have yet to lose a family pet, and I dread for that day to come.

  • red

Aurora piss off to you also. I work with animals myself and have for 30 years. I even have to assist in putting other peoples animals down many times and have my own. It is heart breaking. I just did not care to hear about Daytons pets at 5 am this morning and I do not like Dayton personally.

    • Chuck

Red, So you wake up in a bad mood and have a need to share it with everyone… Please give it up already. Dayton is a famous person and that is a fact, so he will make the news a few more times than you do…

  • Lois

As a pet owner of many years, I view them as my furry four footed children and it’s always a heartbreaking loss. The fact that this made news is good, and hopefully will draw attention that we need to find cures for all cancers, human and animal. Gov. Dayton, I am sorry for your loss, my sympathies to you and yours. She may be gone, but she will never leave you.

  • Patti

I lost my beloved Shepherd Duke to a chronic illness this past spring. I still miss him every day. I’m so sorry for your loss and the suffering you had to witness before that loss, Governor Dayton. May your memories comfort you.

  • mark from

I understand the loss of a family pet, they are like family. My heart goes out to you Governor Dayton.

  • B

I agree with Red because is this really newsworthy? I have lost a couple pets and it’s not easy, but the news should be spending more time on informing us about more important things.

    • Aurora

Then don’t read the damn story! Cripes!

  • Bonnie

Governor Dayton, I am sorry for your loss of Dakota. A pet if very definitely a member of the family. We lsot our Golden Retriever after 14 years. It just is not the same but life does go on – and someday our pets will be running to meet us once again : ) Time will help you to heal.

    God bless you.

Dear Red: You have more issues than National Geographic. You have done a splendid job of putting your idiocy into full public view. Get a life, even if you have to raid a Petri dish.
