Minn. Panel To Review Capitol Security Measures

View Comments

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Gov. Mark Dayton and top lawmakers are activating a panel on Capitol security to recommend ways to keep the building safe for visitors, staff and officials.

Dayton met Tuesday with legislative caucus leaders and State Patrol Chief Mark Dunaski.

He says the committee will consider options including metal detectors and more sworn officers to the Capitol Security detail.

The Democratic governor says there has to be a balance between public safety and open access to the Capitol. He also says there’s no way to guarantee complete protection.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch (kohk) says a welcoming atmosphere is important.

Dunaski says people are safe in the Capitol now but he welcomes the security review after a mass shooting in Arizona killed six and injured a member of Congress.
