Twin Cities Gas Prices On The Rise

Podcast

By Susie Jones, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There's pain at the pump, with the price of gas up significantly in the Twin Cities. At Bobby and Steve's Auto World in downtown Minneapolis, the price of regular unleaded is $3.19 a gallon.

Customers like Kelly Rice, who commutes everyday from Lino Lakes to downtown Minneapolis, said it's a drag.

"Yeah, we stay in quite a bit these days. We don't go out too much, we don't travel in the car. It keeps us away from family and friends," she said.

Ted Brausen is with the Service Station Association. He said some blame the increase on a leak in the Alaskan pipeline and on the gulf spill. But he believes it is more tied to demand in other countries.

"Our demand here in the US may not be up, but I know China is, and Africa is," he said.

Brausen said there is also talk that the price of gas could reach $5.00 a gallon by the summer. That doesn't sit well with Katie Doffing, who is a student at North Central University.

"It kind of makes me mad. It's kind of a huge jump and I have no idea why," she said.

Doffing said she and her friend will be carpooling to school for the time being because of the high price of gas.
