Minn. Pair Named State’s Longest-Married At 73 Years

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — A St. Cloud couple who have spent at least 70 Valentine’s Days together have been recognized by one group as the couple with the longest marriage in Minnesota.

A faith-based marriage group called Worldwide Marriage Encounter presented a certificate Saturday to Tony and Rose Ament. The couple will celebrate their 74th anniversary in April.

Tony turns 100 in July, and Rose is 97. Tony recalls the days of the Great Depression, when the couple had to postpone their marriage for three or four years because he was only making 40 cents per hour. Still, that didn’t stop them from going dancing almost every week.

Rose tells the St. Cloud Times that she and Tony liked each other at first sight.

Tony and Rose say it’s the little things that keep the sparks going. They have four children, 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

wow is that cool or what. I would love to shake their hands and give them both a hug. Way to go you 2. I feel so young. We will be celebrating our 25th this year. So God bless you 2 for many more years to come.

They may be the longest couple, but they are not the longest married. George and Beata Hawley of Rochester, Minnesota were married on July 5, 1936. They celebrated their 74th anniversary last summer. They have already been featured, in a local magazine “Generations of Today” for their 70th anniversary in the July 2006 edition.

Hey Bonnie: Rose and Tony are the greatest. They give great hugs, too. Congratulations on your 25 years of marriage. Grandpa Tony would tell you that you’re just getting started! How would I know? Because I am one of their 11 grandchildren. Happy Valentine’s day.

  • Beautiful!

What a fantastic thing to read about! Congrats to Rose and Tony – what a beautiful story! …..I wish there was more of this kind of news! (vs. deaths, corruption, child abuse, etc)

  • Kim Magney

This is a wonderful thing to read about, however, Harry and Christine Magney of Brainerd were married for 75 years in November of 2010. In fact, they will each be celbrating their 100th (Christine) and 101st (Harry) birthdays in May of this year.
