MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A dog is being credited for saving his family from a fire near Cologne, Minn.

Firefighters were called to a home at 8950 Joyce Road in San Francisco Township around 11:59 p.m.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office said three people were inside the home sleeping when the fire started, but they were awakened by the family dog.

They were able to get out of the home unharmed by the time crews arrived.

The house was heavily damaged. The Minnesota State Fire Marshall, Cologne Fire Department and the Carver Co. Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

Cats have alerted their owners of fires and gas leaks. My cat will let me know there is severe weather in the area even before my weather radio goes off. People need to know how to read the body language of their cats, since they are not as loud as dogs.
