MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The bicyclist who was injured in a Minneapolis hit-and-run incident has been identified by police.

Police say Bruce Daniel Merrill, 58, of Minneapolis was struck while riding his bike near the intersection of 14th Avenue North and Lyndale Avenue North. It happened at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Merrill was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and he is currently in critical condition.

The vehicle that struck the bicyclist left the scene without providing assistance or information to the Merrill.

Investigators are working to interview witnesses, though they say no one actually saw the crash happen. No one could give a description of the driver or provide police with a license plate.

Police also haven’t released any information about what sort of vehicle the suspect may have been driving.

They are asking anyone who may have information regarding this case to call the Minneapolis Police Department’s traffic unit at 612-673-2981.

I don’t have all the details of this particular incident but I work a late shift in Minneapolis and have encountered many bicyclists on my way home at night that wear dark clothing, have no lights on their bikes and don’t obey any of the traffic rules. It is really hard to see these folks until you are right on them, especially if they are riding the wrong way on a one way street which I see frequently. I truly hope this person is ok, and perhaps he was doing all the right things but wish the bicyclists that don’t play by the rules understand how their behavior makes it a bad situation for all.

Conservatives, and liberals need to learn the rules of the road, the law.
Bicycles have the same rights to the road that a motor vehicle does.

    1. Mike says:

The laws change every election, your bycicle utopia will not happen. Grow up.
We know what really goes on with you bike riders, pediphiles in tights, cruising around, looking for boys.

      1. Seth says:

Wow Mike. Way to take a serious and tragic accident and make it about you and your off the rocker comments. I hope this man recovers fully, maybe that should be your focus too. Your comments paint a picture of you as a person who enjoys seeing bicyclist get hit. For the record your feared bike utopia is occurring right under your nose. 100 more miles of bikes lanes, Nice Ride is expanding to more locations in Mpls and St. Paul. Get used to it and share the road. I and many other safe and law abiding cyclists are tired of drives feeling an entitlement to the pavement and are fighting back. Cut me off or hit my while I am riding and you can expect a bike lock through your side car window. Bet you won’t make that mistake again…

        1. Rusty Shakelford says:

No my picture is 1 liberal atheist Ahole per 300 vehicles protessting to share the street with you children’s toys.
Didn’t our parent teach us NOT to ride our bikes in the road? What do you expect is going to happen?
Hey, If you eat hot food, your toungue gets burned.

        2. Mike says:

Hey just because YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO DRIVE that is not our fault Seth. TERRORISM IS NOT THE ANSWER. Besides, I legally conceal and carry FOR JUST THIS REASON. SEE WAKE UP AMERICA, THIS IS THE FACE OF THE BIKE RIDERS, crooks and anarchists. We have families and lives, but they are fighting back because they cannot afford a vehicle or gas. NO MORE OBAMA.
One to one hundred cannot change a law Seth, and terrorism WILL NOT WORK, in fact, it is VERY dangerous.

          1. Jean-Paul Dangerbunny Beaulieu says:

What does Obama have to do with you being a sociopath? You are one creepy kinda coward. You sit on the internet making threats and silly assumptions. Grow up dude, the sun is out and winter is over. It’s okay to was the lotion off your hands and go outside.

  3. Gopher says:

Just tonight I had a driver cut across lanes, and almost broadside me in a Target parking lot. When I hit my horn the driver, who never looked, almost jumped out of their skin. Wake up people.

    1. Mike says:

Yes Gopher, they are VERY defensive. They feel they are better than you because they are not polluting and killing the planet. COO COO!!!

  4. Mike says:

What is the rule when a deer is in the road?

Keep going is the safest way, if we have to swerve it is very dangerous for our families in our vehicles. I don’t think these people have kids. You know what I mean.

    1. Shane G says:

@Mike, you sound like trash to me. Maybe you should go back to your dump and not come out. Ever again.

      1. Mike says:

Well Shane, you are wrong. STAY AWAY FROM OUR KIDS BIKE RIDERS! We know what you are up to.

        1. Gopher says:

Sounds like you’ve had experience Mike, maybe the law should consider taking your kids until they check you out.

          1. Mike says:

Gopher? Why the tights? Don’t try your creepy distrctions.

  5. Mike says:

And we will NOT move to risk our own families lives.

  6. Mike says:

Invest in a vehicle you bum.

  7. Jean-Paul Dangerbunny Beaulieu says:

Hey Mike, What was that about beating me into a coma?

    1. Mike says:

If any bike rider ever clips me or my family, they will not have a very good day.

  8. Nancy Jane says:

I hope the man’s wife doesn’t read any of these comments. For shame, Xtians.
