Mauer Recovering From Illness

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer is injured — and sick.

General manager Bill Smith said Friday before the Twins’ game at Tampa Bay that Mauer went to a hospital for evaluation and treatment Thursday night after “suffering from extreme flu-like symptoms.”

Smith said Mauer was sick during and after the 4-3, 10th-inning loss to the Rays. Mauer received fluids and antibiotics and was discharged back to the team’s hotel.

Mauer was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday because of leg weakness stemming from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

The three-time AL batting champion and 2009 AL MVP is scheduled for a follow-up visit to a specialist in Baltimore. The doctor treated Mauer’s lower-back problem that put him on the DL for a month in 2009.

Get well soon Joe! We need ya!

  • Will

Is anybody else getting tired of this guy hardly ever playing?

    • Sue

  • Jobu

Nope Will, just tired of you

    • Stan Charleston

Agreed, Joe Mauer is a daggone hero in these parts, saying anything negative about him should be a crime, I think this should be an exception to the first amendment, people should be jailed for speaking out against Mauer.

      • Sue

Joe Mauer is an over rated baby making 25 million a year, that should be a crime and he should return the money.

        • Sue Sucks

Sue, if someone offered you 25 million dollars, I’m sure you would give it back too if you weren’t performing as expected 10 games into the season of the 8 day contract. Look at the big picture. They are protecting their investment. Why should he risk future permanent damage for something that might just need a little rest. Get a clue Sue!

          • SB

Pay for performance like everyone else! He he can’t play or isn’t playing is well as the other player (like lately) take a deduction in pay! Very disappointed in him on the 4/10 game against Oakland. Shouldn’t have had to pay for my seat that day. You could tell he was in no shape to be out there.

        • Go Ahead

Is it Xavi? We get to rip on sports icons because they get so much money and positive attention for what…hitting a ball? Go ahead Sue…rip away. Not that Joe will really care what anybody has to say ;)

    Holy Suffering Cats

  • Jen

People, this could be VERY serious lets stop making comments and judgements about what a baby he is and remember he is a HUMAN BEING. His life and health come before your precious Fantasy Baseball team. I hope you all feel terrible if it comes out that something is really wrong. I am praying for Joe that he gets good news and can over this quick.

    • Go Ahead

Sure Jen go ahead and pray. Not sure why you would use up some of your influence with your god though for a baseball players. Don’t you have family members, neighbors or know people truly suffering that you could pray for?

      • Jen

yeah I absolutely know some one who needs all our support right now, Joe Mauer. Do you really not know how serious this could be? Look it up, brain, spine, other serious health issues. I’m a huge Twins Fan and very disappointed he is not playing but trying to put this into perspective-obviously you care very little for human life.

  • Mastiff

Geez Jen you sound like a GB Packer fan (by the way the Packers suck!) Somebody insults you sports team and you take is so personally. Maybe you should stop talking to your 17 cats.

  • lymemama

Joe might be served by a good doc that might look into Lyme disease, Erlichiosis, Bartonella or Babesiosis, all tickborne illnesses that come out as soon as the temps warm over 28.

Flu like symptoms in Minnesota, especially after the end of flu season, or following a trauma (like surgery) should always alert people of a possible tick borne infection. Worth seeing a doc who will look at labs, but also consider symptoms.

    I hope someone considers it.
