Volunteers Help Sandbag Lake Homes Near Perham

PERHAM, Minn. (AP) -- Volunteers are helping sandbag lake homes threatened by high water near Perham.

West of Perham, Little McDonald Lake and Devils Lake are surrounded by land with no inlets or outlets. With the ice gone, and recent rainfall, there's no place for the water to go.

The Daily Journal of Fergus Falls reports that volunteers spent Wednesday sandbagging. Perham High School students and sentence-to-serve crews from Otter Tail and Becker counties were among those helping out.

Retiree Al Krueger says he's lived at Little McDonald Lake since 1989 and has never seen the water this high.

Some roads near the lakes west of Perham are under water. Officials are working to improve the ditch systems, to help lake property owners.
