Gay Rights Is Center Stage For Protesters At The Capital

By Rachel Slavik, WCCO-TV

ST. Paul, Minn. (WCCO) -- Minnesota lawmakers are putting in long hours at the capital as they are trying to agree on a budget deal by Monday or face a possible government shutdown.

In the capital rotunda, the focus was on the budget.

"We're here to make sure the politicians don't sweep us under the rug," said Linden Gawboy, who was rallying at the capital.

Dozens rallied against government cuts and for fair taxes.

"Some people here in this house, our house, think that's how you balance a budget, on the backs of the poor," said Grant Stevensen, a Lutheran pastor.

Outside the House chambers, gay marriage took center stage.

"My wife and I have been together for 14 years," said Christina Hughes-Court, a gay rights supporter.

"Marriage has to be defended -- a man and woman, plain and simple,' said Norm Coone, a gay rights opponent.

In anticipation of a house vote, the largest crowd yet filled the halls and shouted their support at any lawmaker who passed by.

Fallout from Friday's prayer service still has many wondering if a decision to bring in controversial Rev. Bradlee Dean will sway any votes.

"I hope they overlook what the Reverend did yesterday," said Emily Bakalob, a gay rights opponent.

The Official Journal of the House, or the record book, does not have any mention of Bradlee Dean. A member of the house brought up that issue Saturday. House Speaker Kurt Zellers said the journal starts at quorum. Since the quorum hadn't started, it was his decision to leave it out.
