MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 21-year-old Blaine man who claims he was sexually abused by a former youth volunteer at a Spring Lake Park church has sued the church and the volunteer.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in Hennepin County claims Emmanuel Christian Center of the Assemblies of God was negligent in its supervision of 47-year-old Paul Brandon.

The victim claims that in 2005, when he was 15, Brandon sexually assaulted him during church-sponsored sleepovers at Brandon’s Brooklyn Park home.

Brandon was convicted last year of assaulting two teens, including the plaintiff. He’s on probation. He did not immediately return a message Thursday.

The church says a background check was conducted on Brandon. And it no longer allows adult supervised sleepovers at homes of volunteers because “the safety and security of our students is our highest priority.”

The 1960s caused this. A decade is to blame, not the church.

    2. St Paul says:

Hey religionsux… why does it suck?

  3. Victim Du Jour says:

So based on The Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment. Public School Unions can be sued for negligence, when a public school employee sexually abuses kids? Even when nothing turns up in a background check?

  4. Todd W. Olson says:

VD, your understanding of constitutional law is so lame and vaccuous that it makes me laugh. This, like most of your mistaken 14th Amendment arguments, has nothing to do with equal protection.

  5. Victim Du Jour says:

The 14th Amendment reads pretty clear to me. Laws must be applied equally in this country.

You are just worried Democrats won’t get their campaign money if Public School Children start collecting multi-million dollar sex abuse settlements from the Unions.

So you are playing it down like the media accuses Bishops.

    1. Are you kidding? says:

Why does extreme always have the same crazy sound to it? What does all this have to do with this story? Gads.

      1. Victim Du Jour says:

Harassing religious institutions is the way of the Ku Klux Klan.

He was “just helping the kid over the fence…”
