Good Question: Where Is The Safest Place To Live?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's nearly summer, which means WCCO-TV viewers are asking about severe weather and going on vacation. We're hitting "Reply All" to some of the best questions of the week.

• When it comes to natural disasters, where's the safest place to live in the U.S.? Asked Bob Hainlen fromMaple Grove.

Sperling's Best Places analyzed hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, drought, and hail risk.  According to a New York Times article, they found Corvallis, Ore., to have the lowest risk of 379 metro areas in the U.S.

Washington State is pretty safe overall. There's a small risk of earthquakes that far in the northwest, and in general, there's little extreme weather.

The highest risk is in the south: Dallas is the worst. Texas gets every kind of severe weather except for earthquakes.

• Why does the sky turn green before severe weather? Asked Megan Humphries from Minneapolis.

This is a tough one. One theory is that the rain and hail during thunderstorms turn the clouds blue.  When the sun starts to set and turn red, the red sun shines onto the blue clouds making the sky look green.

Another theory is similar, that the clouds are a canvas. The red light from the low sun combines with the blue sky and that's projected onto the cloud as green.

We do know the green sky issue is common in some parts of the world but not others. It's just weird.

• What are the top summer vacation spots in the United States? Asked Kyle Tonn from Maple Grove.

According to Forbes Magazine, the top visited summer vacation spots in the U.S. are Times Square inNew York, the Las Vegas Strip inNevada and the National Mall in Washington D.C.

Mickey Mouse also ranked high on the list with Disney World and Disneyland coming in at fifth and sixth.
