Stillwater Bridge To Close If Government Shuts Down

STILLWATER, Minn. (WCCO) – One of the busiest bridges in the eastern metro won't be in service if the state government shuts down July 1, officials confirmed Friday afternoon.

The Stillwater Lift Bridge, which connects Minnesota and Wisconsin over the St. Croix River, will close  if a budget deal can't be reached at the end of the month, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Friday.

Officials said the bridge would close June 30 and would have a standard detour route through Hudson, Wis. It would close, MnDOT said, because the bridge wouldn't be viewed as a critical government function.

Thousands of motorists use the bridge on a daily basis to commute between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
