The U.S. Department of Defense says 22-year-old Cpl. Michael Nolen of Spring Valley died Monday while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province.

Nolen was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

My good friend died in Afghanistan last year, so to those who make these “God bless..” and “my prayers are with you..” comments, just put a sock in it already. In fact, what we ARE fighting against is religious absolutism (Taliban) and the oppressive religious ideology of Islam. So when I hear people asking some unseen entity to comfort the family of the decedent, I get riled because it is this twisted thinking and irrationality that is actually our enemy and the true enemy of our continued civilization. Peace.
