1 Injured In Ammonia Leak At St. Paul Business

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- An ammonia leak in St. Paul sent one person to the hospital and forced several businesses to evacuate.

The St. Paul Fire Department was called to the scene at the Midway Cold Storage around 8:45 Tuesday morning.

St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said it was a significant leak of anhydrous ammonia which is a "very serious respiratory irritant."

One person was injured before the St. Paul Department was able to shut off the leak. That person was taken to Regions Hospital where their injuries are unknown at this time.

About a dozen buildings of nearby businesses in the industrial park had to be evacuated and streets were blocked off until the area could be ventilated.

The St. Paul Fire Department remain on the scene monitoring the ammonia levels until they are lower.
