MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Hiawatha Light Rail line will be shut down between the Target Field and Metrodome stations over the weekend.

The closure is to accommodate construction as Xcel Energy works near the company’s headquarters along 5th Street South.

The closure will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, July 8 and last until 3:30 a.m. next Monday.

Metro Transit buses will provide transportation along the closed portion of the route. Though Metro Transit says the buses will run more frequently, they will also take longer than train rides along this stretch.

In several years of riding the Hiawatha Line downtown, I never witnessed any drug deals or drug dealers in action. The police presence and the presence of the transit authorities is heavy.
