Porn Shop Coming To Uptown Has Neighbors Riled Up

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Some Minneapolis moms are upset about a new porn shop opening on Hennepin Avenue.

The shop, located near the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and 24th Street, is called Hustler Hollywood, and it will sell adult videos and other sexually- oriented merchandise.

Mary Hartnett says she and other neighbors do not want the Hustler Hollywood store in the neighborhood.

At the time of this report, the remodeling of the retail space is almost complete, but there are still no signs that the space will become an outlet for porn.

“On [the Hollywood Hustler] web site they advertise themselves as selling hard core porn,” Hartnett said.

Hartnett says the store would be a bad fit for the area, which includes a school and a synagogue.

“It’s bringing people into this neighborhood that are interested in hardcore pornography, and we don’t want it here. ”

Less than a block away, however, is a store called Cockpit Project, which sells products with sexual overtones and caters to gay men.

Scott Larson, who works at Cockpit Project, says that’s he’s never received complaints about the store from neighbors.

“In fact, we work with our neighbors very well,” he said.

As the work continues on Hustler Hollywood, people at the Spyhouse Coffee Shop across the street are keeping an open mind.

Amy Nelson, who works at the coffee shop, says she thinks the store is kind of hilarious.

“We have no idea what to think,” she said. “We’re right across the street, so we will literally see what happens.”

A meeting for people opposed to the Hollywood Hustler store is set to be held at the Common Roots Café on Lyndale Avenue at 8 p.m.

If you are an internet service sales person I would set up right there on the sidewalk and go to town. Seriously, who buys porno in (pardon me) hard copy these days. What a sleazy addition to uptown. I hope they go belly up in a week.

Good luck fighting this one neighbors…the lib courts will rule 1st amendment just like they did with video games. To hell with the moral fiber of our country. Whatever feels right must be right.

    1. Reasonable says:

Ugh, way to preach your fallacies pal. The average gamer is 37 years old, not 7 years old. But hey as long as your convictions are strong it doesn’t matter if you’re wrong does it?

Now let’s take on porn. The industry makes many billions of dollars per year, maybe even more than 100 billion. That amount of money doesn’t just come from “degenerates”, it comes from everyone. How is it “against the moral fiber” to want to look at beautiful people engaged in a legal activity?

  3. Nick says:

So a store that sells sex stuf fto gay men is ok but one that isnt strictly for gay people is bad? hmmm sounds like uptown to me.

  4. Franco says:

“We work with our neighbors very well”, how stupid is that? Only the one’s that are looking for co-ck-extenders. What a joke of an article!

  5. Jake says:

It’s ok for wcco to type the words of the gay store above, but i’m sensored when i type the same name? What a bunch of hypocrites. I tryed posting twice with the title they posted and it wont post mine….hmmmmm?

  6. Ronald Raygun says:

It will only be republican perverts that go there.

    1. Johnny Rain Cloud says:

Haha that’s funny because I saw Gov. Dayton filling out an application so he has something to do while he has our state in lockdown!

“It’s bringing people into this neighborhood that are interested in hardcore pornography, and we don’t want it here. “

Yeah, because your neighborhood is completely devoid of people who watch porn. Uh-huh. Riiiiiiiiiight.

    1. Ogie Oglethorpe says:

      I agree.

““It’s bringing people into this neighborhood that are interested in hardcore pornography, and we don’t want it here.”

Like their husbands. Notice it’s the repressed spinsters and snaggletoothed missionary Mary types who are opposing it.

If they don’t want to buy anything from the store, then they shouldn’t. It’s really as simple as that.

FTA: “We have no idea what to think,” she said.

I believe it. I’m glad I’m smart enough to know better than to think it makes me “neat”, “enlightened” or “grown up” to giggle and be agog at *naughty stuff*. 8 year olds do that. Sex is a wonderful thing, but as a grown up, I don’t want to lead a crotch-centric life. It’s ok for my dog, but it’s not for me.

    1. Ogie Oglethorpe says:

I suggest you do not patronize the store, or others like it, if that is your opinion.

  9. plus size model says:

The whole thing wounds gay to me.

    1. plus size model says:

The whole thing sounds gay to me.

    2. Yep says:

Your name is an oxymoron, it cannot exist.

  10. Jake says:

Oh, so straight porn is ‘hardcore porn’, but gay porn is something else. OK, I get it. Unbelieveable what gets portrayed as ‘decency’ in Mpls nowadays.

  11. GayGuy says:

It’s uptown for god sakes. Hennepin Ave, It’s supposed to have sexual stores, That’s what uptown is. Artsie Fartsie, and Gay. HELLO!

  12. Rogue says:

There are some major differences between Larry Flint’s new store and the CP Project. The CP is primarily a clothing and accessories store with a few “adult” items. The CP also has a very understated storefront that shows respect for the community that it is in. Most people walk past it without even knowing what it is. Flint’s store, i can only imagine, will put it in the neighborhood’s face about the wares they will peddle.

  13. Yep says:

Hopefully they have a small theatre or viewing area. I will stop by often.

  14. uptown mom says:

I was at the meeting and I can assure you it’s not just moms who are upset about this. Some of the most vocal in the group were dads who don’t want hardcore porno-perverts and sexual predators anywhere near their kids. Let’s not forget, a LOT of families live in this neighborhood and children attend school less than 350′ away from this shop. The zoning laws must be changed and I suggest you all look at your neighborhood zoning. This is NOT the first Minnesota neighborhood Larry Flynt’s ‘corpornate’ empire plans to conquer!

    1. Reasonable says:

I’m curious as to why you think pornography increases sexual predation? It seems to me that it would relieve tendencies and urges. Then again it also seems that the most repressed people are the ones committing acts of predation and not the “degenerates” that you think will suddenly be running around your block. Face the reality that porn is here and it always will be and just accept that it’s OK and you’re not going to be hit on the head with anything. Unless you want to be, which is cool with me if that’s your thing.

  15. Reasonable Opposed says:

All sorts of people were at the meeting, and it was NOT primarily “moms.” Those of you who are generalizing about Uptown and it’s residents and/or defending porn as the right to freedom of speech aren’t getting the point.
I would guess most people who spoke up at the meeting weren’t “against” sex or porn, their concern is about Flynt’s morals.
Flynt is a misogynist who has been extremely successful in hiding his sex-addiction and mistreatment of women for his own profit. He has done this by claiming it’s all part of the First Amendment.
Those who vocalized their concerns have every right to be concerned that the location is too close to family-filled, residential neighborhoods. They are being protective of their children and themselves. There are reasons that MINORS have restricted access to porn. Their minds aren’t yet able to distinguish appropriate behaviors.
MANY studies have shown that with prolonged exposure to sexually explicit materials, individuals tend to be desensitized to it and distorts individuals’ sexual views and behavior.
Flynt isn’t local. Flynt doesn’t care a lick about being a good neighbor. Flynt is out to make money selling porn with complete disregard to its possible effects.

  16. Jake says:

Really?? And none of the other pornographers are any different?? Just because Larry Flint isn’t from Mpls, you will form a lynch mob and run him out of town? So if the owner was a local, then you would embrace him in a loving hug? Do you know of ANY porn king who ISN’T a misogyinist? IF so, then why do you allow all of the other sex shops to exist anywhere in Mpls?? Why don’t you get your mob together and shut them all down??

  17. Larry says:

This feels like a depression-era happening. Porn, burlesque, prohibition, cigarettes were guilty pleasures of an ignorant, bygone era.
We know better now. We know how addictive alcohol and nicotine (among others) have proven to be. And yet tobacco companies have been peddling their wares to younger and younger people in this and other countries, just for money, pure and simple. It’s not a product anyone believes in. It’s about money.
Pornography served a purpose at different times in history, and the lack of honesty and freedom may have caused extreme behaviors. But now we know more about the brain. For instance, that there is no better way to alter it’s chemistry than by feeding it visuals that stimulate the endorphin release system, coupled with a physical response (eventually, not in the proposed store itself, let’s hope!).

“Sex addiction” is the fastest growing addiction in the world.
What the men and women of Lowry Hill/Kenwood and others object to is the proximity to school children only 350 feet away and the heavy traffic traveling on Hennepin. This not a case of “if you don’t want it, don’t buy it.”
    Porn hurts everyone, eventually.
