MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The 17-year-old teen whose body was recovered at Wirth Lake after an apparent drowning has been identified.

The medical examiner said Darien Samson Marshawn, of Minneapolis, died of an accidental drowning at Wirth Lake.

Friends say Marshawn just graduated from high school and was a father to a little girl.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, three friends decided to cool off by going for a swim at Wirth Lake Beach, which is currently closed and under construction meaning no lifeguards were on duty.

Around 3:45 p.m., Marshawn started to struggle in the area of a partially submerged dock and his two other friends couldn’t help him.

This is the first lake drowning in Hennepin County this year. Officials urge those who are not strong swimmers to stay near the shoreline.
