ST. PAUL (WCCO) — St. Paul Police said they’ve recovered the vehicle that hit and killed an elderly man who was just cleaning up the street in front of his home.
Roger Tetu was hit at the intersection of Earl and Margaret Streets in the Dayton’s Bluff area of St. Paul.
Police said the driver took off after it happened and the man they think is responsible.
Tetu and his wife have lived in the same house for 56 years.
Neighbors said he often cleaned up the streets and picked up litter at Margaret Park across from his home. They said that’s what he was doing when he was hit.
“I see the guy always by the curb picking up stuff,” said one neighbor. “He was a nice old man liked to keep the neighborhood clean.”
On Tuesday night, family, friends and neighbors put up a makeshift memorial near the road for Tutu.
“He always had a kind word for everyone in the neighborhood and always helped out,” said another neighbor.
St. Paul police said they’ve identified the man they believe is responsible for the deadly hit and run.
They’re not releasing his name yet, but may later Wednesday morning if he has not been found.
