ST. PAUL (WCCO) — St. Paul Police said they’ve recovered the vehicle that hit and killed an elderly man who was just cleaning up the street in front of his home.

Roger Tetu was hit at the intersection of Earl and Margaret Streets in the Dayton’s Bluff area of St. Paul.

Police said the driver took off after it happened and the man they think is responsible.

Tetu and his wife have lived in the same house for 56 years.

Neighbors said he often cleaned up the streets and picked up litter at Margaret Park across from his home. They said that’s what he was doing when he was hit.

“I see the guy always by the curb picking up stuff,” said one neighbor. “He was a nice old man liked to keep the neighborhood clean.”

On Tuesday night, family, friends and neighbors put up a makeshift memorial near the road for Tutu.

“He always had a kind word for everyone in the neighborhood and always helped out,” said another neighbor.

St. Paul police said they’ve identified the man they believe is responsible for the deadly hit and run.

They’re not releasing his name yet, but may later Wednesday morning if he has not been found.

How sad- Step up and face up to what you did moron!

  2. Sam says:

Why not release the name? They are going to anyway.

    1. Jay says:

Sam, I couldnt agree more, in fact, by releasing his name, his friends, family, aand citizens would know he was wanted and could aid in his turning himself in.

  3. Momma of 2 says:

Geez people – If you hurt someone you need to be a man/woman and face what you’ve done.

This was an innocent person who died and certainly doesn’t deserve not getting justice!!!

    Grow a pair!!!!

    1. K. says:

Chances are, the driver could have been any of the following: a) an illegal immigrant, or b) did not have a valid driver’s license, or c) did not have any insurance, or d) was drunk or any of the above. So, naturally, he ran.

  4. zee the reporter says:

R.I.P old man i hope they find the driver!

  5. Shelly Michels says:

I think the person was probably drunk and has a few DWIs under his belt already, besides not having a license. That is why he ran.

Why do we have to take it there?? My son is part mexican….doesn’t mean he is illegal or won’t have insurance…I don’t understand why everything has to be targetted towards race and making rude, ignorant comments. This was a definite tragedy and I feel for the family and neighbors that lost this man.

    1. Kari says:

Um…who said anything about race or immigration status?

If you’re responding to the comment by Shelly Michels, people can lose their license for DWI, which is likely what she was referring to.

      1. Me says:

The comment was probably deleted by WCCO.

    2. The Outdoorsman says:

Uh oh. Sounds like em had a little Mexican in her. *wink*

  7. East Side lady says:

First and foremost that intersection has been a problem for years people fly down the hill miss the stop sign and hit people last year a 5 yr old girl was ejected from her mothers van in that same intersection something has to be done by the city to improve that road.. I’m sure they will find the driver without the public’s help the can is registered to somebody

  8. Katie says:

Nothing was said about being mexican, it said “illegal immigrant”, stop making this something that it isn’t! There is an elderly man who lost his life due to the selfish act of some punk. And if certain people watched the news, witnesses said he was WHITE! They know who’s vehicle it was and will find this guy and hopefully our justice system doesn’t fail!

  9. Steph says:

I am in the process of moving from the corner of Earl & Margaret. This is the ?? major accident in the past year?? I was a neighbor of Roger’s, living right across the street on this same intersection. He was probably the only one that kept up on his daily lawnwork. He was always willing to keep an eye on things when you we’re away. He will be missed by many. My blessings to his wife and family.

    1. Jim S. says:

So, is there any part of St. Paul left that isn’t taking on a, erm, prison yard esthetic?

Here’s something for you to google. Agent provocateur. It’s when someone pretends to be something they’re not in order to get a reaction. Some people troll chat rooms so they can make racist remarks, then they can turn around and say, “see!? see the racism inherent in the system!!!!?” It’s also known as, “trolling”. Just wanted to help some of you “get with the times”.

  11. Buffee Gabrielson says:

I was shocked when I read about Roger. I haven;t seen him in years but from all the great things that were said about him gave me comfort that he was loved by all. My heart goes out to Kevin, Debbie, Greg, Susie, Janie, Nancy, Connie and Tammy. his wife Eileen. He’s in heaven with Monica and Mom and Dad Paul and Cora Tetu.
    God bless
