Minn. Authorities ID Teen Who Drowned In Pool

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — Hennepin County authorities have released the name of the girl who died after being pulled unconscious from a Brooklyn Center swimming pool last week.

The medical examiner’s office says the girl was 14-year-old Helen Nyabochwa of Brooklyn Center. The office on Sunday ruled her death an accidental drowning.

Police were called to an apartment complex Friday about 6:30 p.m. on a report of a child found unresponsive in a swimming pool.

Officers arrived to find that a bystander had pulled Nyabochwa from the pool and begun CPR. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 7:10 p.m.

Authorities say she’d been swimming with her two younger sisters in an outdoor pool when she was discovered unconscious in the deep end.

I plead with the African immigrant community and their leadership to teach the young children to swim when you come to America. This does not have to happen and can be avoided.
