Police: Man,19, Punched Officer In The Face At Mini Riot

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 19-year-old man faces assault charges after he punched a police officer in the face Saturday night during a mini riot in Minneapolis, police said.

Police responded to a fight at a massive teen party, known as “Big Bash 2,” at the Hyatt Regency, located a 1300 Nicollet Mall, at around 10 p.m.

While police secured the bloodied fight scene, Marquellus Welch walked through it, police said.

A police report painted this picture:

An officer told Welch not to step inside the crime scene. Welch responded to the officer with a profane remark and continued to walk into the restricted area.

The officer lifted his hand to prevent Welch from continuing, but Welch pushed it away. The officer then tried to grab and arrest Welch, and Welch responded by punching him in the face. The blow broke the officer’s glasses.

The officer then struck Welch and tried to pull him to the ground. At that moment, other officers ran in and assisted in restraining Welch, who kicked his legs and waved his arms. The officers fought with Welch “for quite some time” before they had him under control.

Welch faces one count of assault on a peace officer, one count of obstruction of the legal process and one count of trespassing. The assault and the obstruction charges are both gross misdemeanors and carry the penalty of a up to a year in jail and/or a $3,000 fine.

Nineteen is not a “teen”. He is an adult and should be treated that way in court.

You must not be very good at reading.

I agree. That is junk journalism at it’s finest.

He is nineteen and a teen. That does excuse his behavior, though I would have paid money to watch him pop the cop.

    • Brian

Me too…only because I’d love to watch the curb stomp they gave him afterward.

      • Red(neck), white and blue

Now see, I’d pay to watch the cops turn a bunch of dogs loose on the thugs. The bros be scared of dogs. Maybe some rubber bullets, then the water cannons to wash what’s left of the human debris down the sewer. They could sell tickets to an event like that.

  • Wana be gang member

THink they should have “tazed ” his arse a few times. Oh wait that would be police brutatality and he would win a huge sum of money for not following orders. Must of been showing off for his other (as in one) friend.

No Respect for Authority. Just that simple. Bet he doesn’t have a father either.

    • me

Knowing the standards for the ‘hood’; he probably actually has a dozen or so …

none of which are actually LIVING with “mom” of course …

Fathers day cards in the “hood” are addressed to “Occupant”…

    • White Bread

He doesn’t have a father (or know who his father is) but you can bet your arse he’s fathered a few (future) young urban thugs himself. Interesting

  • Matt

Appears to be a nation wide trend these days, feral youth out of control. Must be those crazy white kids from the burbs.

  • Jake

IMO, the ‘boy’ is lucky to be alive. Is he like the great-grandson of MLK or what?
Who in the hell does he think he is? Does he think tha obama will throw him a pardon ‘pronto’?

  • just sayin

Should get a felony for that. Good luck with a future now dumb kid.
