Having a birthday at the beginning of September means it easily flies under the radar. With the start of school and new schedules to be settled into, I never expect much in terms of birthday parties or celebrations.
While everyone else is distracted, I usually escape for a weekend and explore places like Austin, Texas and Toronto, Canada. Last year I road-tripped to Des Moines and this year I celebrated in La Crosse. It’s become a tradition that I really enjoy as I’m always looking for new experiences.
Another new experience this year was celebrating my birthday at Midtown Global Market. With plenty of food vendors, shopping, and a kid’s play area, it’s like going to the mall, but with much better options!
Grabbing tacos and elote from the new Sonora Grill, pho from Pham’s Deli, kebabs from Holy Land, enchiladas from Los Ocampo, and pizza from Jakeeno’s, we gathered in a common area to eat together.
Who needs birthday cake when you have cupcakes and bars from The Salty Tart?
The kids had a blast in the play area making endless Lego roads, giving us adults some time to talk.
Midtown Global Market may be an unusual pick for a birthday celebration, but for me it was a great way to explore new cuisines while relaxing with my family and I’d highly recommend it to others.
Where are your favorite places to celebrate a birthday?
