Charges: Man Accused Of Assault At Edina Movie Theater

EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) – A 19-year-old Bloomington man is accused of assaulting another man at an Edina movie theater after a verbal altercation during a movie Monday night, according to charges filed Friday in Hennepin County Court.

Randi Vongnalath was charged with one felony count of third-degree assault in connection with the incident.

According to a criminal complaint, Edina Police were called to the AMC Movie Theatre at Southdale at about 11:47 p.m. Monday on a report of a fight. When authorities arrived, an adult male victim told police he had been stuck in the face by an Asian male.

The victim said he had been watching the movie “Paranormal Activity” with his girlfriend when he got into a verbal altercation with two Asian men about noise they were making during the movie.

The dispute calmed down, but the victim and his girlfriend had to walk by the two men on their way out of the movie. One of the men struck the victim in the face, and he suffered broken bones in his nose, eye socket and jaw. One of the Asian men also reportedly had a knife, the complaint states.

Police eventually tracked down Vongnalath and got a positive ID from the victim. Vongnalath faces up to five years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines if convicted.

hit in the face, broken bones, another with a knife. to bad the victim wasn’t a concealed carry card member, could have taken out 2 more criminals.

Work on that G.E.D. there, big fella.

It’s GED you probably don’t even have one of them

i’d still take the risk and stand up for my rights as well. letting bullies do whatever they want because you’re afraid of risk is a sad state this country has become used to. people are too afraid of conflict and the police can’t deal with everything. i do counter that he could have asked the ushers to deal with it first before he felt the need to say something.

  • Yuck

There should not be any browns at the Edina theaters, so sad they’re everywhere.

OK i’m sure you’re a fat bag of chit anyway.

Why does this article continually refer to “Asian ” men. Does it matter what nationality they are? Why don’t you mention the nationality of the 19 year old Bloomington man? My guess is that he is caucasian. No need to mention that?
I would like to know one reason this detail was important to the story. Wake up….It is 2011……stop your biased reporting and stick to the story.

    • Fred

actually i am surprised they did. most of the time the leftist news stations in the twin cities never mention race if the person who commits the crime is not caucasian, so it is surprising they actually did this time. they also didnt spell struck correctly the first time.

I agree with Jill McCarty, there is no need to mention race, or nationality in any article of this nature. I’ve run into similar situations in the past with people talking during a movie. In one case the Sheriff had to be called. The last time I got up and walked out shortly after movie started, and didn’t bother to ask for a refund.

    • Fred

well then you are not much of a movie buff if you did that, and not even ask for a refund? thats a little too sheep for me. but to each their own.

  • Movie Buff

Fred, I paid to see that film at another theatre, at another time. It’s not worth fighting with some idiot and paying a attorney, many times more than the cost of a movie, just to prove a point. I have sat through as many as three movies in an evening, and can be found in my favorite theatre every week.
