MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dara Torres and Missy Franklin had two of the top three times in the preliminary 50-meter freestyle Saturday at the Minneapolis Grand Prix.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday night at the University of Minnesota.
Amanda Weir had the top preliminary time at 25.36 seconds. Swimming alongside one another in their heat, the 44-year-old Torres finished in 25.46; the 16-year-old Franklin in 25.53.
Michael Phelps, who won the 200-meter freestyle and 100 butterfly Friday night, had the second-fastest time in the 200 butterfly at 2:01.83, 0.07 seconds behind Scott Clary.
Phelps was also second-fastest in the 100 backstroke at 55.97, just behind David Plummer’s 55.42. Ryan Lochte was fifth at 56.27.
