MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The effort to recall Wisconsin’s controversial Republican governor is expected to begin Tuesday, although his opponents have yet to come up with a candidate to replace him.

Democrats and union leaders are organizing the effort to oust Gov. Scott Walker after he pushed through a law that effectively ended collective bargaining for most public workers.

Democratic strategists would like to see a big name like former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold or retiring U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl run against Walker, but they’ve said they aren’t interested. Other potential candidates are quietly jockeying for position and preparing for a primary to narrow the field if the party can’t agree on a nominee.

Recall organizers must collect more than 540,000 signatures by Jan. 17 to trigger an election, likely in spring or summer.
