ST. PAUL (WCCO) — Mayor Chris Coleman and St. Paul Council President Kathy Lantry met with Gov. Mark Dayton Tuesday to outline several concerns regarding a Vikings stadium plan that would also include renovations to the Target Center.

Representatives from the city of Minneapolis made it clear last Wednesday that they will only support a Vikings stadium plan in Minneapolis if it includes a $150 million renovation for Target Center.

However, Coleman said that’s not fair.

“Tying the Vikings Stadium to a Target Center renovation is unbalanced, inequitable, and against the best interest of the City of Saint Paul, the region and the State of Minnesota,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman in a press release.

Minnesota Wild Chief Financial Officer Jeff Pellegrom said while they believe in public support for stadiums, investing state funds needs to be thoughtful, without risking the appearance of the state picking “winners and losers.”

Lantry added if taxpayer dollars are being used, it needs to be evenhanded, “where one region of the state isn’t harmed for the benefit of another.”

Practical lesson and message to Ziggy: You want to build your stadium where you want to build it, figure out how to pay for it yourself. If you want this state to pick up part of the tab, expect that you’ll end up building it where you’re told to – like it or not.

Coleman opens his mouth all the time but it just shows how he wants to join the big time. He thinks by speaking out it is going to give him exposure and help his political career. This is his political career anyone who has spoken with him knows St. Paul is his only stop. You dont hear about Mayors of Duluth and Rochester speaking out all of the time yet in my opinion they have much more viable cities than St Paul. Fix St Paul dont worry about other cities like it or not St Paul is just a blip on the map.

The Vikings want a new stadium, but we can’t afford the upkeep on what we have now. It wasn’t long ago we were shown crumbling parking ramps, that capitol building, not to mention bridges. I’m surprised we haven’t seen the Tea Party marching to the Capitol in St. Paul to protest where all this money is coming from.
