DETROIT (AP) — The Minnesota Wild have recalled goalie Matt Hackett under emergency conditions after losing starter Niklas Backstrom to a lower-leg injury.
Backstrom was hurt early in the first period of Thursday’s shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens and had to be helped off the ice.
The Wild brought up Hackett from their AHL affiliate, the Houston Aeros, before Friday’s game at Detroit. Josh Harding is expected to start against the Red Wings.
The 21-year-old Hackett is 2-0 with an 0.68 goals against average and a .979 save percentage in four games with the Wild this season, stopping 94 of 96 shots on goal against him. He was Minnesota’s third-round draft pick in 2009.
