Northfield Mom Pleads Guilty In Toddler’s Death

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (WCCO) – A 21-year-old Northfield woman pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge in Dakota County Court Friday in connection with the death of her 17-month-old son back in June of 2009.

Melissa Louise Ohmann had been charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of Nicholas Arthur Miller on June 23, 2009. Ohmann admitted that she failed to seek proper medical care for her son after he was hurt on June 19, 2009. Medical experts said that Miller’s death could have been avoided if she had sought the right medical treatment.

Tyler Hokanson, her former husband and a stepfather to the child, was convicted of first and second-degree murder last November in connection with Miller’s death. Hokanson was sentenced by a judge to life in prison for repeatedly shaking the 17-month-old boy and refusing to get him medical treatment.

Prosecutors said that Hokanson shook his stepson, causing bleeding in his brain, a broken back, blunt force trauma and other injuries. Miller died several days later at a relative’s house in Pierce County, Wis.

Ohmann will be sentenced in Dakota County Court on June 12.

    hang them both………………:(

I agree Gail……no trial necessary. There a lot of trees and ropes!!

Mom is not a word I would use to describe her

She probably is not feeling much like a Mom. But those injuries minus bruising are not always that easy to notice. I walked around in a great deal of pain for a month after being injured in a car accident. Neither my doc or my chiropractor thought there was anything wrong but soreness from the accident. My husband insisted they do x rays. My back was broke as well as two ribs.

When you toddler all of a sudden can’t walk, is having trouble breathing and is lethargic it is pretty d*** noticeable. She is an f****** idiot and deserves to rot in jail.

You must be on some really strong pain medication to try and say a toddler with broken back, bleeding brain, and other injuries wouldn’t be noticeable! Either medication or you are just f**n nuts!

This is sick. This “woman” (who I would NOT call a mom, either!) deserves to be beaten to death as well. Just as the baby was. Sick. Sick. Sick.

    Oh god yuck

  • Common sense

    capital punishment

No big deal. She can always have another kid if she wants one.

    • TS

She already has 2 or 3 other ones. Tyler even broke the ribs of the youngest when he was only 3 weeks old.

All these stories make me sick and just about bring me to tears for these innocent babies! As a mother to young beautiful children, there isn’t a SECOND of ANY DAY that I don’t put my childrens’ well being at the TOP of my priority list. How in the h*** can a MOM let something like this happen to their child??? You’re #1 responsibility as a MOM is to love, protect, and provide for your children!! Absolutely sick… RIP sweet baby :(
