EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels and the Minnesota Vikings have agreed in principle to a new, two-year contract.

Rick Smith, the agent for Rosenfels, confirmed Monday that the deal was in place. It was first reported by FoxSports.com.

Rosenfels was eligible for unrestricted free agency, which begins Tuesday.

Rosenfels was acquired by the Vikings in 2009 from the Texans for a fourth-round draft pick, but he never saw the field behind Brett Favre and Tarvaris Jackson and was traded to the Giants the following year. Rosenfels joined the Dolphins last season and was waived in November before the Vikings claimed him. They wanted a veteran third-stringer to complement Christian Ponder and Joe Webb.

Smith says Rosenfels was comfortable in Minnesota and with the team.
