COON RAPIDS, Minn. (WCCO) – Police are investigating after a baby boy apparently fell out a window Saturday at an apartment complex in Coon Rapids.

Anoka County Dispatch received a call about the incident on the 11000 block of Raven Street NW in Coon Rapids. The complex is a three-story building, but it’s not known how far the baby fell or where exactly at the apartment complex the incident happened.

Sgt. Tom Hawley says the little boy was leaning up against a screen window when it gave way.

“Child landed on the lawn down below,” Hawley said. “Police, Cood Rapids Fire Rescue and Allina Ambulance responded, and he was taken to Mercy Hospital in Coon rapids.”

Hawley says there was family inside the apartment at the time of the accident. The baby was crying when paramedics took him away; his condition is not known.

This happens more than it should and the Leala law passed in 2007 is not helping to reduce these incidents. We need to voice our concerns to congress to enforce apartment complex owners to require the use of window guards or open window locks on existing windows. Then we should go after the problem maker (window manufacturers) and get them to redesign the windows! There are simple solutions to preventing such tragedies. Why must it take an act of congress to make our homes safer for our children?
