MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tyus Jones became a starter for Apple Valley as an eighth-grader. Two years later, he’s the Minnesota Associated Press Player of the Year for high school boys basketball.
The award was announced Tuesday. Joining Jones on the AP all-state team were four seniors: Siyani Chambers of Hopkins, Joey King of Eastview, Tyler Vaughan of Braham and Johnny Woodard of Duluth East. Jones was a unanimous pick for the award.
Jones already has double-digit scholarship offers from major college programs, but he’s not ready to choose. For now, he’s trying to help his young Eagles team take that next step. Apple Valley lost in the Class 4A, Section 3 final this year to Eastview for a spot in the state tournament.
