Senate Approves Alcohol Sale At ‘U’ Stadium

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO/AP) — The Minnesota Senate has approved a bill that would let the University of Minnesota sell beer to the general public at University of Minnesota football games.

The Senate approved the change Wednesday as part of a larger liquor policy bill that passed on a 58-4 vote. The House plans to take up a companion bill this week.

The measure allows the University Board of Regents to sign off on a liquor license application for TCF Stadium.

A school spokesman says the board supports the change.

NewsRadio 830 WCCO’s Edgar Linares Reports

“Its pretty backwards to not have beer in the first place. I think its a plus to have beer. It’s part of the game and the atmosphere,” said University of Minnesota student Eric Vavra.

Last year, the University of Minnesota wanted to limit liquor sales to luxury suites in order to boost those ticket sales while curbing drinking among minor students. But state lawmakers have pushed for more open general sales for several years.

One U of M student said when it’s done for the right reasons, having alcohol at a college football stadium can aid the game day experience.

“I think for Gopher fans it’s long overdue. But when we get other rowdy fans in there and they get alcohol in their system it might not be the best idea to have that happening,” said student Shawn Hennessy. “I’m close with a lot of people on the football team. They take it very seriously and they want the fans to take it seriously. If fans get in there and its all about being drunk rather than watching the game they’re not going to be too happy about that.”

    Just what Zygi ordered.

    1. mark trail says:

what may I ask does Zygi have to do with U of M policy? Oh, I get it, You are an anti-stadium or OWS type that just cannot pass up a chance for a cheap shot-no matter how irrelevant it is.

      1. Luke says:

because the vikings are going to have to rent out TCF stadium for 4 years while they build on the metrodome site.. that is why this is relevent to zygi

        1. q & a says:

They actually will still be playing at the Dome while they build around it for 3 years and play at TCF for the final year of the project. So it’s really not all that relevent.

          1. Bill says:

Sorry to upset you with reality but they will be playing in the dome for the next twenty years.

            1. Shane says:

Right, geez, keep it up anti-fun person. Go home and take a laxative to see if you can get rid of some of the bitterness.

    2. Death says:

It’s been in the works for yrs. Had nothing to do with your comment.

      1. player says:

suspect you more wrong than right …. there was very little support for this and it’s been killed before.
Now with the possible scenario with the Vikes it was double the push.
I could care less – I realize that most of the folks there are lushes and already tanked so what’s the difference?

  2. Fred says:

MN could be so lucky to have such a smart and shrewed business man as our governor. Not some d-bag, bug-eyed, twitchy, liberal whiny twit like we have now.

    1. James Asp says:

Tim Pawlenty is NOT governor anymore genius!

      1. q & a says:

        Tim Pawlenty was a liberal?

      2. q & a says:

        I didn’t know Pawlenty was a liberal.

        1. Bill says:

He certainly isn’t a conservative. That’s why his campaign for the Republican nomination failed.

  3. RML says:

Oh good, now there can be even more drunken fights and brawls….

  5. vikessuk says:

Idiot sports fans HAVE to be drunk ALL of the time.

    1. Superior Human Being says:

Idiot internet posters HAVE to comment ALL of the time.

    2. Shane says:

I am a sports fan and I do drink, but not at the game. I drive 96 miles to see a game, so why would I waste the experience? Shhhhhhhhh, du-mas

  6. customer says:

Drink your booze at home and watch football there too. No need to booze it up at the stadium. Of course, it’ll make more business for Detox / Court for public drunkeness.

    1. Nate says:

Actually, it’s likely to just make more business for the actual stadium itself.

      1. customer says:

There should be a detox and jail built inside the stadium.

        1. Silly fools says:

          LMAO …. Bingo

  7. Pumphandle says:

Finally a reason to watch 1 of the worst teams in college football the last 30 years, booze makes everything better if you don’t think so then you’re either a recovering alcoholic or don’t know how to enjoy it.

  8. G Dog says:

Pumphandle= moronic comments. His reserve of intelligent observation has obviously run dry.

    1. Pumphandle says:

Awe I hit the painful chord with a recovering alcoholic, G Dog

  9. Class Discrimination says:

“University of Minnesota wanted to limit liquor sales to luxury suites.”

This amounts to social class discrimination based on income. If a person cannot afford a luxury suite he/she/it cannot drink beer/booze at a UofM game.

    1. customer says:

File a discrimination suit, then you will be able to afford a luxury suite.

  10. Bill says:

Will it be strong beer….or 3.2?

    1. truth hurts says:

either way, it will be overpriced

      1. Silly fools says:

Be great for the mob scene …. not we get druken mobs to go with the flash/terroist mobs having fun in downtown
Ya really gotta love this …. get ’em drunk enough and they either fight or won’t know what hit ’em
Maybe they just need to blow this state off the map huh … ghetto thugs and drunken thugs = Minneapolis

      2. Robert says:

        Overpriced?

        What’s overpriced about 12 dollars a beer?

        1. Silly fools says:

          anything over free
If ya gotta get sauced to enjoy football you got issues. period
