St. Paul To Hold Earth Day Event On Harriet Island

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- St. Paul celebrates Earth Day Sunday with the annual "Wishes for the Sky" event on Harriet Island.

The community celebration is billed as a zero-waste, family-friendly event. It runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Participants receive handmade, bird-shaped kites on which to write their wishes. They then fly the kites on the Great Lawn at Harriet Island Regional Park.

Kites are re-used each year. Since 2007 more than 4,000 wishes have been flown.

Organizers say less than three pounds of trash was generated after more than 1,000 people attended the 2010 event.

Admission is free or pay as you're able.
