ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins are recalling catcher Drew Butera from the minors to add some depth behind banged-up Joe Mauer, and designating third baseman Sean Burroughs for assignment.
The club announced the moves on Tuesday, a few hours before the Twins were to play the Los Angeles Angels. Butera was an offensive liability last season, but he is hitting .279 with one home run and five RBIs in 15 games for Triple-A Rochester this season.
Mauer was injured while catching on Sunday when he took a foul ball off his left knee. He did not play in the opener against the Angels on Monday night, but was in the starting lineup Tuesday as the designated hitter.
The Twins also sent first baseman Justin Morneau home to get his left wrist examined by a specialist. He underwent an MRI that did not show any structural damage — only some fluid and inflammation. The 2006 AL MVP is expected to rejoin his teammates for the series finale on Wednesday night.
