Lake Elmo Teen Drowns In St. Croix River

HUDSON, Wis. (WCCO) – A dive team is currently in a recovery mission as they search the St. Croix River for a Lake Elmo teen who went under water early Monday evening.

Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen has confirmed that the 18-year-old boy was trying to swim across the St. Croix channel when he went under.

The victim, his brother and friends went swimming from a property just north of Lakefront Park on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River, and attempted to swim from the west end of the dike to the Minnesota side.

The teen made it about a third of the way, began to struggle, and turned around to go back to the dike. He went under soon after.

St. Croix County is in charge of the scene, and Washington County is assisting with a dive team.

The teen's name has not been released.
