MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) — A man was arrested Thursday after Maplewood Police say he assaulted a pregnant woman, before kicking and punching a nurse that tried to intervene.
Police say the incident happened in the afternoon at St. John’s Hospital. The woman, who was 34 to 36 weeks pregnant, was being treated for complications related to the pregnancy. Police say a man claiming to be the father of the child, identified as Rufus Meyers, Jr., 32, of Fitchburg, Wis., showed up at the hospital and went into the woman’s room.
Meyers allegedly began hitting and kicking the woman while she was sitting in the bathtub. Three hospital workers, including a doctor and a nurse, came in, attempting to help the woman.
Police say a nurse was punched and kicked.
None of the injuries to the woman or the nurse were serious. Doctors will continue running tests to ensure the unborn child was not affected.
Meyers was placed under arrest for alleged fourth-degree assault.
