Jordin Sparks Promoting New Movie At Mall Of America

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- A big star will be in the Twin Cities Wednesday both at the Mall of America and at WCCO-TV.

Jordin Sparks, known for winning American Idol, is switching to the big screen and will be at the Mall of America Wednesday afternoon to promote her new movie, "Sparkle." It will be out in theaters next Friday.

"Sparkle" is a story of three sisters who became Motown sensations. Sparks will be at the Mall of America rotunda at 3 p.m. to sign autographs for fans.

Before she makes an appearance there, Sparks stopped by the WCCO studios for a quick chat with Natalie Kane.

Natalie: Jordin, you've had quite a career. Let's see, five years -- started with American Idol, you've been on Broadway, television, obviously there's a music career and now you're going to be a movie star.

Jordin: Trying. (Laughs)

Natalie: How does that feel?

Jordin: It feels really good actually. You know, with 'Idol' it was just so crazy and my life completely changed. And I got my dream that I wanted for so long. And acting has always been a part of it but we knew it was something special when we were filming but it's definitely taken on this new life of its own. I didn't think my life could change drastically again, professionally. Personal milestones, like hey, getting married in 10 years and kids and all that. But professionally, I just figured I'll keep singing and maybe do acting and now I have no idea what's coming when this movie comes out. The reactions, so far, have been really positive. I'm really excited.

Natalie: It's called "Sparkle" and it's all about Motown and singing and some dancing in there, as well?

Jordin: We do some choreography in there, yeah.

Natalie: OK, so now you're officially a triple threat.

Jordin: Ooh yeah, I like the sound of that.

Natalie: So tell me about the plot of the movie.

Jordin: Well it's a remake of the 1976 original "Sparkle" and if you've seen that then you kind of know the premise, but it's basically about three sisters, who all get together and decide their going to create this girl group and make it big. But in the middle of that, there are some trials and some obstacles that they have to go through. Each sister has their own thing that they're triumphant over, I guess you could say. But I think there's a little bit of everything for everyone in this film. I was looking at all the characters, I've seen it about three times now, and every time, I watch a different character throughout the whole movie. And every person's performance is strong and there's someone that everyone can relate to so I think it's going to be really, really great.
