MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting an elderly man has died due to West Nile virus.

According to the health department, the man’s death marks the 16th West Nile-related death in this state since 2002.

The man, who has not yet been identified by name, died after getting sick earlier this month.

Experts said that this is the peak season and people need to take precautions. Officials are investigating a number of other possible cases now and expect the number to pick up over the coming weeks.

Currently, there have been 30 reported cases of West Nile in the state this year.
