Coen Bros. Classic 'Fargo' To Soon Be TV Show?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota film directors Joel and Ethan Coen are known for their big screen works, but now one of their most controversial movies could soon hit the small screen.

The Coen's 1996 "Fargo" was a sleeper hit and earned Academy Awards for original screenplay, and for actress Frances McDormand's portrayal of the indefatigable Marge Gunderson of the Brainerd Police Department.

Now the FX Network has been working on a deal to bring the show to an hour-long series format, with the Coen brothers on board as executive producers.

WCCO hit the streets of northeast Minneapolis to see what people think about the movie people either cheer or trash.

"I thought it was a great movie," Dillian Thonnes said. "I love the directors and see all their films."

"Fargo" is probably remembered best for its gruesome scenes -- remember the wood chipper? -- and for the strong Minnesota accents.

"I always thought it sounded a lot more Canadian," said Thonnes, a Minnesotan.

Zach Miller, of Nebraska, took the opportunity to crack a joke.

"I'm living in Fargo right now, even though it's Minneapolis," he said. "Depending on who I speak to, of course."

A representative with FX, who bought the script rights, said that while the network is excited to start development, this show is still in the very early stages.

The potential show's writer, Noah Hawley, is best known as the executive story editor of "Bones" for FOX. This will be his first FX project.
