St. Paul Students Harvest More Than 150 lbs. Of Veggies

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Fall is in the air, and it's the perfect time to pick crops out of the garden.

On Thursday, students at J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School in St. Paul rolled up their sleeves and picked veggies out of the school garden. They harvested over 50 pounds of potatoes and 100 pounds of squash; they also picked kale, beans, pumpkins and carrots.

The students cleaned their crops with scissors and plastic knives.

It was the second year students had a garden as a part of their outdoor education program. Science teachers hope the lessons will lead to healthy living habits.

"I get to try new things," said Ronaldo Alonzo, a 6th grader.

On Thursday, the students made a soup with the vegetables they picked. On Friday, everyone in the school will get to taste the homegrown soup.

Students, teachers and volunteers tended to the school's garden all summer.
