MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 72-year-old woman was severely burned after trying to put out a grass fire at a rural farm on Monson Lake Road in Itasca County.

Police say they received a 911 call regarding the fire at 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday.

Patricia Pauna, who lives on Monson Lake Road, attempted to put the fire out with a shovel and received burns to her legs and arms, according to authorities.

The fire started from a burning pit in the backyard of the residence and spread to tall grass.

Several agencies responded to the fire.

Pauna was airlifted to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Duluth Hospital burn unit for her severe burns.

The fire was contained soon after personnel arrived.
