MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — You’ve probably heard of extreme couponing — people saving hundreds of dollars by combining multiple offers. Well on Wednesday, that trend hit the Twin Cities in a big way.

In a “test program,” Rainbow Foods is offering unlimited double coupons all day today. And these aren’t even the die-hard couponers.

“We’ve had some customers here saving upwards of $150 per transaction,” said Greg Johnson.

They were lined up when Rainbow opened at 6 a.m. this morning.

“It’s a system that they have — they’ll pre-shop the stores, get their items lined up, it’s serious business,” Johnson said.

Lionell Boyd saved his family over $100 today — and really didn’t have to do that much work.

“We prepare ourselves before we come to the store, it might be an hour — maybe an hour and a half — to get ready,” he said.

Here’s a few tips on how you can save big:

1. Gather coupons any way you can — in the Sunday paper, online, etc.

2. Get organized — know what you’re looking for and what you’ve got.

3. Watch for the sales — it’s the best way to maximize your coupons value.

If you can’t make it out to the store today – Rainbow will be doing unlimited double coupons again on Halloween.
