MINNEAPOLIS (AP/WCCO) – The University of Minnesota plans to close its Office of Academic Administration and save about $1.6 million.

The university says it will divide the duties among other departments. The man in charge of the office, Robert Jones, is taking another job as president of the University of Albany in New York.

The office administers study abroad programs, international students, some research initiatives and the university extension service.

The equivalent of 4 1/2 full-time positions will also be cut. The St. Paul Pioneer Press says the university plans to find other jobs within the system for those employees.

The university’s budget plan trims $28 million in administrative spending over two years.

Statewide, the University of Minnesota total enrollment for all academic levels in spring 2012 was 63,933.
