MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A lot of people talk about the nasty state of political discourse in this country, but now someone is actually doing something to make it better.

Minnesotan Nate Garvis helped organize an event called ‘Freed Speech’ tonight at the Pantages Theatre.

The idea is to explore how we can practice civility in not just politics, but all facets of our life.

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien moderated a panel discussion with leaders of varied backgrounds and expertise.

The University of St. Thomas and Target sponsored the free event for the packed house.

“It would be a mistake to think we’re talking only about politics, like politicians should be nicer, that is for sure,” she said. “But it’s how we engage each other as human beings, in our culture, and that’s really critical.”
