BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota State High School League board of directors has approved changes in the state boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments.
Under changes approved Thursday, the order of the two basketball tournaments will be flipped for three years starting in 2014. The boys’ tournament will be played a week before the girls’, and the girls will play a Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule. Boys will continue playing a Wednesday-through-Saturday schedule.
In 2017 and 2018, the formats will revert to the traditional schedule of the girls’ tournament first followed by the boys’ tournament.
Mariccui Arena also will be added as a venue for both tournaments. Mariucci has hosted boys’ basketball before.
The changes are needed because Target Center will host a new college hockey conference tournament during the traditional week of the boys’ basketball tournament.
