FORT SNELLING, Minn. (AP) — Fort Snelling National Cemetery hosts a holiday wreath-laying ceremony to honor and remember the nation’s veterans on Saturday.
The Civil Air Patrol, veterans groups and citizens are holding events nationwide to honor veterans from each branch of the military, the Merchant Marine, as well as prisoners of war and those still listed as missing in action.
The Fort Snelling event begins at 11 a.m.
It’s all part of a national campaign called Wreaths Across America. It started when the Worcester Wreath Company of Maine began donating holiday wreaths to the 131 national cemeteries run by the Department of Veterans Affairs and state veterans’ cemeteries in 2006.
Some of the wreaths donated for the ceremonies still come from the company, but others come from local businesses, civic organizations and private individuals.
