MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) — No one was hurt and the suicidal gunman was taken into custody without incident after an 11-hour standoff in Maple Grove, police say.

According to Cpt. Tracy Stille of the Maple Grove Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check at 7687 Wedgewood Court at 2:14 p.m. Friday.

A 54-year-old male had not been seen for several days. The “key holder” of the home got police inside. There, officers found the male in a bedroom with a loaded shotgun to his head.

After evacuating other residents in the eight-plex, police attempted to communicate with the man through phones and a bullhorn, but he refused.

Hours later at 6 p.m. on Friday, police tried to reach him with several robots from Plymouth and Hennepin County, but he had barricaded additional rooms inside the home and was unable to be reached.

Finally, at 12:55 a.m. Saturday, authorities gained entry, and a negotiator was able to get the man to unarm himself and be taken into custody.

The 11-hour standoff ended with the man arriving at North Memorial in Robbinsdale.

Police are still investigating the incident.

esponding agencies included Minneapolis Police, Plymouth Police, and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. The Maple Grove Fire Department also helped in rotating the tactical teams.
