MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 34-year-old man died Saturday after his snowmobile broke through the ice on Lake Superior, sending him into the nearly freezing water for almost an hour, the Coast Guard says.
James Hudson fell through the ice near Madeline Island in Bayfield, Wis., authorities say.
A witness tried to save the man but kept falling through the ice himself.
When an airboat crew arrived at the scene, the Hudson was unresponsive. He was in the 33-degree water for about 45 minutes, the Coast Guard said.
Crews brought Hudson to Memorial Hospital in Ashland, Wis., where he was pronounced dead.
Hudson was a popular fishing guide in the area.
