Get On Board With White Bear Lake Sailors

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. (WCCO) -- When it comes to youth sports in Minnesota, most of us think of the one that takes place on a lake when it's frozen, seeing this is the "State of Hockey."

But on White Bear Lake plenty of kids are finding an interest in sailing.

When 11-year-old George Velky tells his classmates he's off to practice, they usually need an explanation.

"It's not like the West Coast or East Coast where you can sail year round," Nick Hoveland said.

In the state of the North Star, starboard and port have found their niche, and it's surprisingly easy to get involved.

There are five schools around the metro. Maddie Mass, 12, is the only sailor in her school.

"You just have to try it sometime," she said.

White Bear Lake hosts a high school regatta on Friday and WCCO will bring you the results.
