MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota Vikings fullback Jerome Felton has been suspended for the first three games of the 2013 regular season for violating the NFL substance abuse policy, the NFL announced Monday afternoon.

Felton will be able to return to the Vikings active roster on Sept. 23 following the team's game against the Cleveland Browns.

"We respect the league's decision and Jerome understands it. Jerome is focused on returning to the playing field in week four vs. Pittsburgh," Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman said.

Felton is technically able to participate in the final week of the preseason, but an emergency appendectomy he received two weeks ago might rule him out.

Felton was an important part of MVP running back Adrian Peterson's 2,000-yard season last year.
