Xcel Energy: Faulty Breaker Caused Large Power Outage In North Metro

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials with Xcel Energy said power has been restored to more than 12,000 customers after crews replaced a faulty breaker at a substation late Thursday morning.

Tom Hoen with Xcel Energy said the outages happened shortly before noon Thursday in the communities of Fridley, Columbia Heights, Coon Rapids and Mounds View. He said the outage was at a substation that has distribution lines coming in that feed power to between 1,000 and 1,500 homes. About 12,500 customers were without power.

Xcel Energy officials also said main power sources were knocked out to Unity Hospital, Medtronic and Target Distribution. Crews at the substation found a faulty breaker that was the cause of the outage and replaced it.

Power was restored to the 12,500 customers affected at about 1 p.m.
